Chapter 5 - Histology

 

1.     Know all of the selected vocabulary terms in chapter 5.

  1. Know the definition of histology.
  2. Know the definition of organ.
  3. Know the definition of tissue.
  4. Know the four primary tissue classes.
  5. Know the general differences between the primary tissue classes. (i.e. which are vascular or avascular, which have more matrix than cells or more cells than matrix, which is most abundant etc.)
  6. Know what the matrix of a tissue is and know what materials are found there.
  7. Know the 3 primary germ layers and know what organ systems each layer gives rise to.

9.     Know the characteristics of epithelial tissue.

  1. Know how the epithelial tissues are named.
  2. Know what is meant by apical surface and basal surface.
  3. Know what the basement membrane is and know its function.
  4. For each type of epithelial tissue, know their structure, function and general location in the body.
  5. Know where epithelial tissues get their oxygen and nutrients.
  6. Know what keratin is and know its function.
  7. Know the general characteristics and functions of connective tissues.

17. Know all of the subclasses of connective tissues.

  1. Know the cells of connective tissue and know the function of each.
  2. Know the three types of fibers found in connective tissue and know their characteristics.
  3. Know the two categories of ‘fibrous connective tissue’.
  4. Know the three types of loose connective and the two types of dense connective tissue.
  5. Know the structure, locations and functions of all connective tissues.
  6. Know the three types of cartilage and know their characteristics, functions and locations in the body.  Know what cartilage cells are called.
  7. Be able to recognize pictures of all of the tissues discussed.

25. Know the characteristics, structure and function of bone.

  1. Know the difference between spongy bone and compact bone.
  2. Know how blood is different from other connective tissues and know the characteristics, functions and locations of blood.
  3. Know the characteristics and location  of nervous tissue.
  4. Know the types of cells that make up nerve tissue.
  5. Know what a neuron is and know its structure and function.
  6. Know the three types of muscle tissue and know their charactheristics, structure, function and location.
  7. Know which muscles are voluntary, involuntary, uninucleate, multinucleate, striated, non striated.
  8. Know the four types of intercellular junctions and know their functions and locations in the body.
  9. Know what a gland is.
  10. Know the difference between an endocrine and exocrine gland. (which are ductless, which have ducts, which secretes into an open space or outer body surface and which secretes into the blood stream, which has a longer affect)
  11. Know the types of glands and know their types and methods of secretion.
  12. Know the four types of membranes and understand the differences between each. 
  13. Know where each membrane type is located in the body and know their functions.
  14. Know what mucus and serous fluid is.
  15. Know the different ways tissues change and how tissues grow.
  16. Know what differention, metaplasia, hyperplasia, hypertrophy, neoplasia, apoptosis atrophy and necrosis mean.
  17. Know how tissues are repaired and know the steps of healing lacerations.
